A former deputy director of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) died in police custody in Chattogram last night.

Chandgaon police claimed that the deceased, Sayed Md Shahidullah, 65, a resident of Bahaddarhat Ek kilometer area, was arrested following an arrest warrant issued by a court.

Khairul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandgaon Police Station, told The Daily Star that two of his officers arrested Shahidullah in front of his house last night.

At the police station, Shahidullah complained of chest pain and fell ill. Police informed his family members and called an ambulance to take him to the hospital, the OC said.

"First, he was taken to Park View Hospital and then shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead," the OC said.

OC Khairul said, "As the ambulance delayed, my force and brother of Shahidullah took him to the hospital by a CNG-run auto rickshaw. He died at 11:15pm."

The OC claimed that the CMCH doctors said Shahidullah had a cardiac arrest, reports our Chattogram correspondent.

Shahidullah's relative Salauddin Shimul told The Daily Star, "We had no information of any arrest warrant or complaint before police arrested him. Police in civil dress picked him up and a scuffle took place during the arrest. "

Family members said Shahidullah had a bypass surgery around seven to eight years ago.

"He was a heart patient and had a bypass surgery. We demand a proper investigation by high ups of police," he added.

The OC the body has been kept at CMCH morgue. After a magistrate inspected, further legal procedure will be done, the police official said.

He, however, could not give any detail about the case in which Shahidullah was arrested.
