Ctg’s Fatikchhari violence in 2013: 35 BNP-Jamaat men indicted

Around 35 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat were indicted today in a case filed over violence in 2013 in Fatikchhari upazila's Bhujpur area of Chattogram.

The court of 7th Additional Chattogram District and Session Judge ASM Shahidullah Kaisar framed the charges, said the court sources.

Advocate Rubel Pal, Public Prosecutor of the court, told The Daily Star "The court framed charges against 35 BNP-Jamaat men in a case filed with Bhujpur Police Station over the subversive activities."

"In this case, 22 accused are now on bail while 13 are on the run. After the Bhujpur violence, five cases were filed with the police station," said Rubel Pal.

The accused are Abdul Hamid, Md Shahidul, Md Yusuf, Abdus Shahid, Abul Mansur, Md Sarwar, Md Towfiqul Islam, Md Jamal, Md Yusuf, Md Dowlat, Md Ayub, Md Tajul Islam, Md Kaiyum, Md Yakub, Didarul Alam, Mowlovi Jamal, Md Shamsuddin, Jafar Imam, Joynal Abedin, Bazlul Kabir, Aminul Islam, Lokman Hossain, Borhan Uddin, Md Sazzad, Showkat Osman, Ayub Ansari, Abdus Salam, Azhar Mia, Kabir Ahmed, Nurul Alam, Sahab Uddin, Md Selim, Ziaul Haque, Md Mamtaj and Md Shahjahan.

On April 11, 2013, violence erupted in Kazirhat area of Bhujpur after the Jamaat-Shibir men attacked an Awami League motor procession spreading a rumour that the marchers had killed a 'Bara Hujur' (madrasa principal). The attackers also set fire to around 150 vehicles. In the violence three were killed and one hundred people were injured.

Following the violence, five cases were filed against more than 16,471 people, including 471 by name.
