Choumohani communal attacks: Begumganj OC withdrawn, 1 accused confesses

Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Kamruzzaman Sikder has been withdrawn over the recent communal attacks on Hindu temples, idols and properties during the Durga Puja celebrations at Choumohani in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila.

"Begumganj OC Sikder has been withdrawn and attached to the Industrial Police. In his place Mir Jahedul Haque Rony has been posted as the new OC," Noakhali Superintendent of Police (SP) Shahidul Islam told The Daily Star last night.

Meanwhile, one of the accused Abdur Rahim Sujan (19), arrested in connection with the attacks pleaded guilty and gave a confessional statement in court yesterday.

He was arrested from Karimpur in Choumohani yesterday morning.

"During the arrest, items looted from Hindu community's business establishments were recovered from him. He pleaded guilty and the court sent him to jail after the statement," said SP Shahidul.

"Police are working to arrest the rest of the accused in the case," the SP said.
