Lalmonirhat's Palashi Union Parishad Chairman Shawkat Ali and his wife, Anwara Begum, were arrested today in connection with a case filed over assaulting a 90-year-old woman.

Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Aditmari Police Station, said that the UP chairman and his wife were arrested from Aditmari area this morning and the other accused, their daughter Suhin Akhter, is absconding, our correspondent reports.

On July 19, Shawkat Ali called the elderly woman to the Union Parishad to give her 10 kg rice as aid. After failing to get the relief from the Union Parishad, she went to the chairman's house, the OC said.

The 90-year-old was injured after Anwara Begum and her daughter assaulted her and pushed her to the ground on the chairman's order, said the OC quoting the victim's son. When the woman's son, Nuruzzaman Miah, heard the news, he rushed to the scene, rescued his mother and admitted her to Aditmari Upazila Health Complex.

Later that night, Nuruzzaman filed a complaint with Aditmari Police Station against UP Chairman Shawkat Ali, his wife Anwara Begum, and their daughter Suhin Akhter.
