Case filed against Saidpur mayor for alleged deception

A case has been filed against the mayor of Saidpur municipality, in Nilphamari, on charge of deception.

Gausul Azam Farooquee, a businessman and resident of Nijpara Bangaleepur area under the municipality, filed the case with a Nilphamari court yesterday against two persons including Mayor Rafika Akhtar Jahan as prime accused, reports our local correspondent quoting Court Inspector Mominul Islam.

The other accused in the case is Hasanuzzaman Azam, mayor's personal manager.

Court Inspector Mominul Islam said that the relevant court accepted the case and directed the criminal investigation department (CID) to investigate.

According to the case statement, the complainant went to the mayor to get approval of the design to set up elevator in his six-storey building at the end of last year.

The mayor demanded TK one lakh in exchange of approving the plan, Gausul alleged.

He then issued a cheque in the mayor's name from his personal account at Saidpur branch of AB Bank Limited on December 21, 2020, states the case statement.

Mayor's personal manager Hasanuzzaman withdrew the money from the bank on December 23.

As the design was not approved even after the money was paid, Gausul again submitted papers seeking the permission on August 22 this year.

The mayor demanded TK one lakh from him again denying taking the same amount from him before, he alleged.

Contacted, Assistant Engineer of Saidpur municipality Abdus Selim said that the complainant submitted papers for approval of setting up lift in his building only a month ago and his application is under investigation as there is a case in higher court regarding the land on which the building was constructed.

The engineer claimed that the complainant also filed such case against the previous mayor.

Rafika Akhtar Jahan, the Saidpur municipality mayor denied receiving money from the complainant.

She said that she was elected mayor in the bi-election held in February this year and therefore she could not have taken money as mayor in December 2020.

She claimed the case was filed against her to tarnish her image.
