BNP-police clashes: 11 cases filed against 469 BNP activists, 149 arrested

Many unnamed others also accused

Police have so far filed 11 cases against BNP leaders and activists with different police stations over yesterday's violence and clashes between law enforcers and party leaders and activists.

At least 469 BNP men were named accused in the 11 cases filed with seven police stations. Many others unnamed were made accused in the cases, according to the documents of the cases.

"Police have so far arrested 149 of the accused. The rest are absconding," said Faruk Hossain, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Filing of cases in at least three other cases is underway, police said.

According to the documents, three cases were filed with Uttara East Police Station, two cases each with Uttara West and Jatrabari Police Stations while one cases were filed with Kadamtali, Sutrapur, Airport and Bangshal police stations.

In the cases, the complaints brought charges of illegal gathering, deteriorating law and order, attacking police with an intent to kill, hurling crude bombs at law enforcers, vandalising and setting fire to public and police vehicles.

Sporadic clashes between police and BNP men took place yesterday in different parts of the city including Nayabazar, Dholaikhal, Jatrabari, Matuail, Uttara and Abdullahpur as the party leaders and activists tried to hold sit-in programmes at entry point of the city.
