Beaten up for ‘stealing maize’, speech impaired man dies in Dinajpur hospital

A speech impaired man died this morning while undergoing treatment at M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur. On Thursday (May 12, 2022), he was beaten up for allegedly stealing maize from a local field.

The deceased was identified as Md Nazrul Islam (30), son of late Rafiqul Islam of Prasadpara village under Birganj upazila in Dinajpur.

Deceased's uncle, Md Abu Bakar, told our local correspondent that Nazrul went to Yasin Ali's field at Rangalipara village on Thursday afternoon. After accusing Nazrul of stealing maize from the field, Yasin's son, Abu Hanif, beat him up.

Injured Nazrul was later rescued by the locals, Abu Bakar said, adding that Nazrul has been receiving treatment at home till Saturday (May 14, 2022). As his condition deteriorated, he was admitted at M Abdur Rahim Medical College. He died this morning while undergoing treatment.

Nazrul's family and locals later took his body from the hospital and went to Birganj Police Station to file a case. However, police refused to file a case in this regard.

Locals later blocked the Birganj-Debiganj road at 2pm today to protest the incident. Subrata Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Birganj Police Station, arrived at the scene around 3pm and defused the situation.

The OC said that preparations are underway to file a case in this regard, and that the body will be sent for a postmortem.

Meanwhile, according to police and locals, Yasin and his family members fled the village.
