India's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a man, accused in 11 murder cases in Bangladesh, from near his rented house in Kolkata, after a six-month-long manhunt.

The man, identified as Nurnabi Maxon, was apprehended from a rented house in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting a senior police officer.

Maxon had been staying there with a woman who he claimed was his wife, said CID sources.

Acting on a tip-off from Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) from Bangladesh, West Bengal CID personnel on Saturday night conducted a raid and arrested him from the hideout, the officer said today.

Sources said the CID had been on the lookout for Maxon following a tip-off from the Rapid Action Battalion of Bangladesh after he escaped to West Bengal in June last year.

Maxon, who reportedly has 18 criminal cases against him in Bangladesh -- including 11 relating to murder -- went abroad using an Indian passport along with an associate to work as a mason.

According to the sources, Maxon could face prosecution in India on the charges of making a passport based on forged documents. Otherwise, he is likely to be handed over to Bangladesh soon since it was the Rab that had alerted the Indian police about him.

Maxon had assumed the identity of one Tamal Chowdhury in West Bengal and furnished fake documents for renting the house in the Madhyamgram area, said the CID officer.

During the arrest, the law enforcers seized several documents, one passport that is valid from July 15, 2021, to July 14, 2031, along with cash from his possession, he said.

Maxon had sneaked into West Bengal in June last year and took to selling fish in the New Market area during the lockdown.

"In Madhyamgram, he lived with a woman whom he claimed to be his wife and paid Rs 3,000 as rent. We are investigating whether he had come to India to evade arrest in Bangladesh or was working for any terror outfit in India. We are grilling him," the officer added.

Maxon's activities came to light when his associate was arrested abroad and both were sent back to Kolkata.

The sources in CID, however, did not disclose which country Maxon and his associate travelled to and when.
