9 police officers sued over Jubo Dal man’s death

A leader of a pro-BNP farmers' body yesterday filed a case accusing nine police officers and 40-50 unnamed policemen of killing Jubo Dal activist Shahidul Islam Shaon in Munshiganj last month.

Salah Uddin Khan, a leader of Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal in Munshiganj, also accused 200-300 unnamed ruling Awami League activists in the case filed with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Rahima Akter.

The accused officers are additional superintendents of police Minhaj Ul Islam and Suman Deb, Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Tariquzzaman, sub-inspectors Farid Uddin, Arifur Rahman and Sukanta Baul, and assistant sub-inspectors Nakul Chandra Dhar, Ajit Chandra Biswas and Montu Bodya.

Shaon, 27, died on September 22 of injuries he received during a clash between police and BNP activists in Munshiganj's Muktarpur.

The magistrate fixed October 10 to decide whether the case would be dismissed or sent for investigation.

Contacted, the complainant's lawyer Jahangir Hossain Dhali, also general secretary of Munshiganj Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, said a delegation from the BNP consulted Shaon's family members before filing the case.

However, the victim's younger brother Sohan told The Daily Star: "We do not know who filed the case. We don't want to be involved in police-trouble. We don't want to file complaints either."
