8 get death penalty for killing BCL leader in Lakshmipur

A local court in Lakshmipur today sentenced eight people to death in a case filed over killing BCL leader Mehedi Hasan Jasim in 2013.

Judge Amina Farhin of Lakshmipur Additional District and Sessions Judges Court handed down the verdict, our local correspondent reports.

At that time, seven of the convicts were present at the court and the other, Hizbur Rahman Swapan, remains fugitive.

The seven convicts are Ali Hossain Bachchu, 43, Mostafa, 43, Khokon, 48, Abul Hossain, 68, Mubarak Ulla, 61, Kabir Hossain Ripon, 26, Zafar Ahmad, 61.

According to the prosecution, Mehedi Hasan Jasim was Literature Affairs Secretary of Chandraganj Kofil Uddin Degree College's BCL unit. He was son of Mofiz Ulla of Shrirampur village in Dattapara union of Sadar upazila.

According to the case statement, Mehedi's father Mofiz Ulla had longstanding enmity with Mubarak Ulla and Ali Hossain Bachchu over a piece of land. As a sequel to the enmity, Mubarak and his supporters beat Mofiz and his family members on January 7, 2013. Later, a case and another counter case were filed at the local police station.

On February 10, victim Jasim went to his relative's house in Radhapur village and stayed there. On that night, the accused entered the house by breaking the window grill and shot Jasim and fled the scene, leaving him seriously injured.

Jasim was rushed to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. On the following day, Mofiz filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station accusing 12 named and 10-12 unidentified persons.

Police on march 27, 2014 submitted a charge sheet against 12 accused in the case. Later four of the accused died.
