7 detained for spreading rumour of fire at Sylhet cantonment

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-9) have detained seven men for spreading rumours of a massive fire at Sylhet Cantonment on July 22 by posting photos on Facebook.

The arrestees are--Md Ashfaqur Rahman (32), Ala Uddin Alal (47), Reza Hossain (20), Sohel Ahmed (26), Abul Kashem (35), Rajon Ahmed (28) and Moktar Hossain Maya (28). They are residents of different areas in Sylhet city and nearby Golapganj upazila, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

Samiul Alam, additional SP of Rab-9, said, "On the night of July 22, a rumour of a fire at Sylhet Cantonment at Muradpur area in Sylhet Sadar upazila started spreading on Facebook. Following that, the cyber monitoring team of Rab-9 started investigating the matter."

"After primary investigation, the team found that some people started spreading the rumour to create public nuisance and fear among people. We detained these men after getting proper evidence," the Additional SP said.

They have done a criminal offence under Digital Security Act 2018 and a case will be filed against the detainees soon, he added.
