Four people were arrested over the killing of university student Keshob Ray Papon who died after being stabbed by muggers in the capital's Tejgaon area on Tuesday night.

Police arrested Jewel (18), Jahangir alias Mutto Jahangir (35) and Nuruzzaman alias Mamun (23), said Mohammad Shahidullah, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Division in a briefing today.

Meanwhile, members of Rapid Action Battalion arrested Md Tuhin from Tongi today. Rab said Tuhin admitted to his involvement in the snatching and killing of Keshob.

"Jewel was arrested from Hatirjheel with a switchgear knife. Following his information, police arrested Jahangir who stopped Keshob by brandishing a switchgear knife from Begunbari area while Nuruzzaman was arrested from Noakhali with the knife he used in the killing," said the DC.

Five snatchers have so far been identified from 71 CCTV footage collected from the crime scene and surrounding areas, added the DC.

Keshob (24), a seventh-semester student of Computer Science and Engineering at Sonargaon University, resisted the muggers when they snatched his mobile phone leading to a scuffle.

At one point, Keshob grabbed Nuruzzaman who then stabbed him indiscriminately resulting in Keshob to bleed profusely and collapse on the ground.

Some pedestrians first took Keshob to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. From there he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition where he died two hours later.

Keshob used to work as a part-time computer operator at a courier service office in Elephant Road to bear part of his university's expenses.

"I had to sacrifice my study to cover the educational expenses of my brother who was always good in his studies as our father has been sick for the last two years," Keshob's younger brother Sumendra (18), who works as a construction worker, told The Daily Star.
