2 tourists dead in Cox’s Bazar: Family members file murder cases

Family members of the two female tourists – Laboni Akhtar (19) and Marufa Khanam (23) – filed two separate cases, terming their deaths "planned murders".

The two female tourists died in Cox's Bazar within 24 hours on May 19. They were staying in separate hotels in Cox's Bazar, reports our staff correspondent.

Monir Hossain, Laboni's father, filed a murder case at the Sadar Police Station in Cox's Bazar.

The accused are Kamrul Alam (20) and Arif Rahman Nilu (21) – both residents of Dhaka's Jatrabari area, Tanjil Hasan of Shariatpur district, and Mahim Hasan Anik (20) of Narayanganj, said Inspector Md Selim Uddin.

Among the accused, Kamrul and Arif were arrested under section 54 while Tanzil and Mahim are absconding.

According to the first information report, Laboni left home, saying she was going to a relative's home. The four accused took her to Cox's Bazar and killed her, the report says.

Inspector Selim Uddin said Laboni came to Cox's Bazar from Dhaka with her four friends and checked in Hotel Beach Holiday at Kolatoli on May 11. On May 14, her friends rushed her to Sadar Hospital after she fell sick and was shifted to ICU on May 16 when her condition deteriorated.

Two of the four friends who went to the hospital were detained immediately and they confessed that they had excessive alcohol. Two others fled sensing the situation, Inspector Selim said.

Police recovered Laboni's body and handed it over to the family members after autopsy, he said.

Meanwhile, Saydul Islam, Marufa Khanam's brother, filed a murder case accusing Nasir Uddin at the Ukhiya Police Station.

According to first information report, Nasir killed Marufa Khanam after bringing her to Cox's Bazar.

Gazi Salauddin, Inspector (investigation) of Ukhiya Police Station, said Marufa, a resident of Gopalganj, had checked in Hotel Royal Tulip with Nasir Uddin, of Dinajpur – identifying themselves as husband and wife.

He said they went to their room after lunch and rushed to Sadar Hospital after she complained of breathing problems on Wednesday (May 18, 2022) afternoon.

She was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the hospital, Gazi said.

He said Nasir was detained by police and was shown arrested later.
