The main accused in the murder of Mohiuddin Sarkar – who was shot dead by drug dealers in Cumilla's Burichang upazila on April 13 – was killed in a "gunfight" with Rab early today. This is the first "gunfight" death since the US sanction on Rab about four months ago.

The deceased was identified as Raju (35). The gunfight took place around 1:30am in Cumilla Sadar upazila, reports our local correspondent quoting Kotwali Model Police Station's duty officer, Tanzina.

Besides, several district police officials, who did not want to be named, said one person was killed in a gunfight with the Rab.

Sardar Abdus Sattar, an official of Cumilla Medical College Hospital, said that Raju was brought dead at the hospital at 2:15am.

Major Mohammad Shakib Hossain, commander of Rab-11 CPC-2, could not be reached for comment in this regard.

Earlier, two witnesses said Mohiuddin was shot in Cumilla's Burichang upazila, adjacent to Charnal Hyderabad's Zero Point area on the India-Bangladesh border around 9:30 pm on April 13.

A BGB team rescued Mohiuddin and sent him to Burichang Upazila Sadar Hospital where a duty doctor declared him dead, said Mir Hossain, upazila health and family planning officer.

He said the victim was brought to the hospital at 10:30 pm. "There were four-five bullet wounds in his body. We got him dead," he added.

Later, Mohiuddin Sarkar's mother Nazma Akhter filed a case against Raju and six others last Thursday.
