14 injured as supporters of BCL, Jubo League leaders clash in Sunamganj

At least 14 people were injured -- three with bullets -- in a clash in Sunamganj's Tahirpur upazila yesterday, centring a protest organised following an attack on a journalist allegedly by the supporters of a local Jubo League leader.

The clash occurred between the followers of local BCL leader Tansen Talukder Tushar and Abul Bashar, a nephew of the Jubo League leader Hafiz Uddin, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

No case was lodged but situation is under control, Officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station, Abdul Latif Tarafdar, said.

Police and locals said supporters of Hafiz attacked Ramendra Narayan Boishakh, president of Tahirpur Upazila Press Club, on February 20 following enmity with the latter's son Rajon Chandra.

The clash occurred when Abul Bashar locked into an altercation with Tansen after he attended a human chain organised yesterday to protest the attack on Narayan.

On information, police rushed to the spot and fired seven rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control.

Nine including Tansen and five police personnel were injured during the incident.

Three of them who suffered bullet wounds were sent to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital from where they were shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

The other injured received treatment at Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex.
