A man was killed early today in a clash allegedly over establishing supremacy – between two factions of a ward Awami League unit – at Charkewar union in Munshiganj Sadar upazila. Police have detained a man over involvement in the incident.

The incident took place in Fakirkandi village around 4:30am today. The deceased was identified as Md Jewel Hossain (30), son of Md Hafiz Uddin of Fakirkandi village of the union. The arrested is Md Nannu Bepari (55), reports our Munshiganj correspondent quoting police.

Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station said, "There was a tussle between Charkewar union (ward 8) unit AL President Md Harun Fakir's group and the same ward's AL General Secretary Montu Dewan's group over establishing supremacy. Besides, tensions were running high between the two groups during the current potato season. Jewel Hossain was a supporter of Md Harun Fakir. Jewel was said to have been attacked by Montu Dewan's supporters as a result of recent tension."

Multiple injury marks were found on Jewel's body, said the OC, adding that his body was recovered and sent to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Sumon Dev, said, "Police have detained Nannu, accused of being involved in the incident. Police are conducting raids in different places to detain the rest accused."

Md Ruhul Amin, the deceased's brother, said, "My uncle Harun Fakir and his relatives have planted potatoes in a land. Montu Dewan and his associates were threatening to take the potatoes by force. They have been threatening to kill members of our family for this since yesterday afternoon. They found my brother alone this morning and killed him."

Harun Fakir said, "Supporters of Montu Dewan have recently threatened to take away the potatoes from our land by force."

Montu Dewan denied the allegations, saying, "They are trying to frame me by making false allegations against me. I have no conflicts with anyone. There was no attempt to forcibly remove potatoes from anyone's land. The deceased's relatives were involved in the murder. I'm in Dhaka right now. My group members are not involved in the incident."
