Bhola farmer makes national record in Aus paddy production

A farmer from Bhola Sadar upazila has set a record producing 23 mounds of Aus paddy per bigha by cultivating BRRI Hybrid-7 variety this season.

Farmer Md Yanur Rahman Biplob of Charmansa village has cultivated BRRI Hybrid-7 variety at 8 hectares of land and produced 23 mounds of Aus paddy per bigha, the agriculture ministry said today.

This yield of paddy is higher than the production of any other varieties of Aus season, the ministry said in a press release.

This information was revealed at an exhibition of BRRI Hybrid-7 variety of Aus paddy at Sabuj Bangla Krishi Khamar at Charmansa village on Wednesday.

Department of Agricultural Extension, Bhola organized the programme marking the "Paddy Cutting and Field Day".

According to the DAE in Bhola, the saplings of BRRI Hybrid-7 were planted on 6 hectares of land of Biplob on May 3.

The paddy was harvested through a combine harvester on July 28, 110 days after the plantation.

The yield of the paddy is recorded at 7 tonnes per hectare (23 mounds per bigha), it said.

It will be 4.60 tonnes per hectare if it is converted to rice, it added.

The DAE said the paddy was sold from the field at a price of Tk 650 per mound immediately after the harvest.

The production cost has been calculated at Tk 60,000 per hectare. Excluding the cost, the farmer has made a profit of TK 70,000 per hectare and the total profit stands 5.7 lakh in 8 hectares of land, it said.

BRRI Director General Md Shahjahan Kabir said the BRRI Hybrid-6 variety has a higher yield than all other varieties in the Aus season.

In the coming days, they will try to supply this variety to the farmers through Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), he added.
