Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq today said they were investigating the recent fire incidents in the capital to determine if there was sabotage behind the fires.

He was speaking to journalists after visiting the site of Dhaka New Super Market, where a fire gutted many shops this morning.

The city police chief supervised the activities of the police personnel on duty and gave them various instructions.

He said intelligence surveillance will be strengthened, and at the same time, intelligence personnel in white clothes will be stationed in front of the markets, reports UNB.

In addition to controlling crowds and maintaining law and order in surrounding areas, the police were also seen actively participating in the rescue work and helping shopkeepers relocate their goods from the affected spot to a safer place.

This is the second major fire incident at a market in the capital in less than two weeks.

On April 4, the Bangabazar Shopping Complex was burnt to the ground in a deadly fire.
