Police constable hit by truck dies in Patuakhali

A police constable was killed and his cousin was injured after a truck hit them in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali today.

The deceased was identified as Shawkat Hossain (45), a constable of Patuakhali Police Line, while the injured was his cousin Rafiqul Islam, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.

The deceased policeman hailed from Hijlatla village of Barishal, said Md Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Dumki Police Station.

Witnesses said Shawkat and Rafiqul were coming from Barishal to Putuakhali on a motorcycle.

When they stopped at the Payra Bridge toll plaza to pay the toll, a speeding truck, which had no number plate, hit them -- leaving them seriously injured.

Shawkat died on the way to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital while Rafiqul was admitted to the same hospital, the witnesses added.

OC Md Abdus Salam further said the truck was seized and the body was sent to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
