Just before seven months, the apparel worker Abu Saleh and his wife Monira Akhter welcomed their second son Abdullah Al Momin to the world.

As holy Eid-ul-Fitr is knocking on the door, they decided to take some new clothes for the infant and the elder one to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr. Riding on a rickshaw, the couple along with their two sons was heading towards a shopping complex from their residence in port city's Akmal Ali Road this noon.

But all their dreams shuttered, when the father and the infant were killed when a speedy container-laden lorry hit their rickshaw around 12 pm in front of one Shah Shopping Complex under EPZ police station.

After the incident, the aggravated locals and pedestrians caught and beat up the lorry driver, leaving him injured, said police.

Talking to our Chattogram staff correspondent, Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of EPZ Police Station, said "Riding with the rickshaw, the couple was going for Eid shopping from the Cement Crossing area to Bandartila but the rickshaw was hit by the lorry from the side."

"After being hit by lorry, the father and son fell off the rickshaw and crushed under the wheels of the lorry and they died on the spot," said the OC.

"The four-year-old elder son Abdullah Al Mahir was also injured but the mother luckily escaped any injuries," he added

Police sent the bodies to the CMCH morgue while legal procedure regarding the incident is underway.

Police seized the lorry. The injured driver was undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) under police custody.

Earlier four days ago, a couple was killed in city's Lalkhan Bazar area after a cement-mixture truck rammed their motorbike during the rush hour before Iftar.
