Father, baby die as private car plunges into canal in Sylhet

A man and his infant daughter were killed and three others of the family were injured after a private car plunged into a canal beside the Sylhet-Tamabil highway in Sylhet's Jaintiapur upazila  today (August 5, 2022).

The deceased were identified as Rubel Ahmad (35) of Kundarpar village of Narsindi's Shibpur upazila and his 40-day-old daughter Rahi Akhter Adori, said Golam Dastagir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Jaintiapur Police Station.

The injured are Rubel's wife Kajal Akhter, Kajal's brother Russell Ahmed and his wife Anika Akhtar, the OC told our Sylhet correspondent.

The accident took place in Lakshmipur area around 9:30am when the family were on their way to visit some tourist spots in Sylhet's Gowainghat upazila, said the police official.

Citing witnesses, OC Golam Dastagir Ahmed said, "The approach road to the bridge has a curve and the private car lost control, and plunged into the canal below. Locals instantly rescued the passengers and rushed them to the hospital."

"The child was declared dead at the upazila health complex while the father was pronounced dead after arriving at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital," he said.

The injured are also undergoing treatment at the hospital while the bodies were placed into the morgue, the officer added.
