Car hits motorcycle killing 2 in Kurmitola

Two people were killed and a child was injured after a car hit their motorcycle in Kurmitola area in the capital early today.

The deceased were identified as Shamim Mridha, 35, an employee of DPDC and his cousin Jannat, 18, a college student, family members of the victims said.

Their niece Sadia, 8, was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Rashedur Rahman, a sub-inspector of Cantonment Police Station, said the three persons sustained injuries after a car hit their motorcycle around 2:30am near Kurmitola General Hospital.

They were rushed to the hospital and later shifted to DMCH where Jannat died in the early morning, police and hospital sources said.

Shamim breathed his last around 10:00am, the SI told the Daily Star.

Police seized the car and detained the driver, Saied Nabi, 24.

A police official said the detainee was driving the car recklessly presumably under the influence of alcohol.

Police are investigating the incident, he said, requesting anonymity.

Jannat's father Bahauddin said Shamim and some other relatives including Sadia's parents came to visit his house at Kuril Bishwa Road area yesterday evening.

The accident took place as they along with Jannat was returning to their house in Matikata area under Cantonment Police Station, he said adding Sadia's parent were on another bike.
