5 killed in road accidents

At least five people were killed in road accidents in Netrakona, Tangail and Faridpur yesterday, report our correspondents.

In Netrakona, two people were killed and 10 injured in a head-on collision between  a truck and a bus in Sadar upazila around 5:15am.

The deceased  are bus driver Sabuj Mia (45) and his helper Sohel Mia  (35), said OC Khandakar Shaker Ahmed of Netrakona Model  Police Station. The Netrakona-bound bus collided with the paddy-laden truck on Netrakona-Mymensingh road, the OC said. The injured were taken to local hospitals, he added.

A team of Mymensingh police removed the two vehicles from the road  around 9:00am, resuming vehicular movement on the route, he said.

Police seized the vehicles but the truck driver fled the scene. A case was filed.

In Tangail, two people were killed when a speeding truck hit their bike on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur upazila.

The deceased are Yasir Hossain Kanon (20), a college student, and Shahidul Islam (20).

SI Billal Hossain of Gorai Highway Police Station said the accident  occurred around 9:30am. Yasir died on the spot while Shahidul succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

In Faridpur, Abul Bashar, a sergeant of Bangladesh Air Force, was killed in a road accident in Sadar upazila around 3:00am.

Bashar (34) of Satkhira's Assasuni upazila was recently transferred to Jashore airport from Dhaka headquarters. The accident took place on Dhaka-Khulna highway when he was travelling on a covered-van while shifting his furniture and valuables to Jashore.

OC Kangkan Kumar Biswas of Karimpur Highway Police Outpost said, "We suspect that the covered van, in which Bashar was travelling, hit a truck from behind. We found the covered van's front part damaged and recovered the body from its left seat." The van was seized but its driver fled the scene, he added.
