2 children drown in Dhaka’s Azimpur Staff Quarter pond

Two children drowned in a pond at Dhaka's AzimpurGovernment Staff Quarter this afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Lota (11) and her friend Razia (10), both street children.

The duo along with some other children went to the pond to take a bath around 12:30pm.

As the two girls drowned, their companions -- who knew how to swim -- rescued them,Mominul Hasan, one of the children there, said. 

Razia was taken to Azimpur Maternity Hospital where doctors declared her dead while Lota was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College around 2:00pm.

AKM Ashraf Uddin, officer-in-charge of Lalbagh Police Station, said police have been sent to the site and hospital for investigation after the incident.
