AL leader killed in Sylhet city

Unidentified criminals stabbed an Awami League leader to death in Sylhet city's Zindabazar area last night.

The victim, SM Abdul Ahad, was the organising secretary of Kuwait unit AL. He was the son of Nur Miah of Medini Mahal village in Moulvibazar's Rajnagar upazila.

Witnesses said some criminals stabbed Ahad in front of Sylhet City Centre Shopping Complex around 11:00pm, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Several AL leaders and activists at the hospital said Ahad came to the city on Thursday to attend a meeting marking the National Mourning Day where AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader was present. Ahad was supposed to leave the city for Rajnagar last night, they added.

Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said the motive behind the murder could not be known immediately.
