Five Indian nationals, who had entered Bangladesh illegally and had been imprisoned, were released this morning from Kurigram district jail.

They were handed over to Indian police at Changrabandha, under West Bengal state, through Burimari land port by Bangladesh's immigration police. Kurigram district jail superintendent Ismail Hossain confirmed the information to our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

The Indian nationals are Alam Mia, Nuruzzaman Mia, Selim Mia, Jahangir Alam and Alam Sheikh.

According to Jail Superintendent Ismail Hossain, the five Indian nationals' sentences expired a year and a half ago. However, they were not released from prison due to the complexities.

They were released today from prison once the process between the two countries was concluded.

The five Indians were held by law enforcement for illegally entering Bangladesh, said Advocate SM Abraham Lincoln, convener of Border Victim Rescue Legal Assistance and Public Prosecutor (PP) of Kurigram District Judge's Court.

The process of releasing and deporting the Indians was accomplished thanks to the efforts of human rights campaigners in both nations, he added.
