Who’s the man who shot Abe?

Shinzo Abe, the former Japanese prime minister, was shot today (July 8, 2022) while speaking at an election rally. Soon after, the man identified as the shooter was taken into custody.

Here's what is known about the shooter so far.

1. According to reports, the gunman is a local named Tetsuya Yamagami.

2. Tetsuya Yamagami (41) is believed to be a former military man.

3. He was reportedly standing 10 feet away behind Shinzo Abe when he opened fire on him.

4. During his speech, Shinzo Abe fell on stage. Security personnel tackled Yamagami to the ground.

5. The man did not attempt to flee, according to NHK.

6. He is now being questioned at the Nara Nishi Police Station.

7. Reports claimed that he admitted to the police that he "targeted Abe with the goal of killing him."

8. He was reportedly "dissatisfied" with Shinzo Abe.

9. He used a shotgun and has been charged with attempted murder, said reports.

10. The gun is believed to have been hand-made by the accused gunman.
