20 hurt in BNP-cop clash in Kurigram

Around 20 people including a policeman were injured as the opposition men clashed with law enforcers in Chilmari upazila of Kurigram this morning.

One motorcycle was torched while an ambulance, another motorcycle and two bicycles were vandalised during the incident, reports our Kurigram correspondent.

Police fired 89 rubber bullets and six teargas canisters to quell the situation, said Rejaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Chilmari Police Station.

The clash ensued around 10:45am when a group of BNP men brought out a pro-blockade procession near Ramna High School intersection in the upazila.

As law enforcers barred the processionists led by Manjurul Islam, general secretary of the upazila unit BNP, the clash started.

Constable Ratan (identified only by first name) was injured in the clash, the police official said.

Confirming the clash, Mamun, (full name could not be known immediately) the upazila nirbahi officer, said over 20 people may sustain bullet injuries during the incident that took place in front of his office.

Angered by the police interruption, the opposition men torched and vandalised the vehicles on the road, he said.
