19 Amar Desh press staff sent to jail

A Dhaka Court on Sunday sent 19 press staff of daily Amar Desh to jail after rejecting their remand and bail petitions in a case filed for printing the daily without the government permission.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arefin passed the order after Ramna police produced them before the court with a seven-day remand prayer for each of them.

The Dhaka district administration, aided by Ramna police, Saturday night raided the press and office of Bangla daily Sangram at the capital’s Moghbazar for printing Amar Desh in last two days illegally.

Police picked up the 19 staff of the Amar Desh from the Sangram office.

Magistrate Nasrin Sultana filed the case with Ramna Police Station on the same night against the Amar Desh authorities for printing the daily at Al-Falah press without permission.

Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Bangla daily Amar Desh, was arrested on Thursday and placed on a 13-day remand in three cases.

Later that day, police locked the Amar Desh press and seized a computer and some documents.
