10 hurt in Ashulia worker-cop clash

At least 10 people were injured as hundreds of apparel workers clashed with law enforcers in the Ashulia industrial belt, on the outskirts of the capital, this morning demanding Tk 8,114 as minimum wage.

The clash took place when thousands of readymade garment workers put blockades on Jirabo-Bishmail link road in Ashulia around 9:00am, reports our Savar correspondent.

Around 2,500 workers of several factories in Jamgarah, Pukurpar, Jirabo, Aamtola, Kathgora and Jirabo gathered there.

The agitating workers threw brick chips at the factory buildings beside the road and set fire to tyres during the blockade that lasted till 9:45am, said Shahid Ullah, Shahid Ullah, senior assistant director of Ashulia industrial police.

Ten workers sustained injuries as police charged baton to disperse the agitators, the police official said.

Production at 10 factories was also suspended for the day following the clash.

Meanwhile, owners of six garment factories in the area decided to suspend production for an indefinite period following the unrest throughout this week, Abdus Salam, owner of Readyance Knit Garments Ltd told The Daily Star.
