Legal notice served to declare Latif's parliament seat vacant

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday sent a legal notice to the Speaker of parliament and chief election commissioner asking to declare Abdul Latif Siddique's Jatiya Sangsad seat vacant in 24 hours.
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Aknod in the notice said he would file a writ petition with the HC, if Latif's seat is not declared vacant.

 

Samaritan shot by muggers

A car driver was shot and injured while trying to save a man from muggers in the capital's Kalabagan last night.
Mohammad Habib, 50, with a bullet wound to his left leg, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The injured told reporters at DMCH that he along with a few other people chased three muggers when they were about to rob a pedestrian near Madina Tower on Central Road around 8:00pm. The three fled on a motorbike, firing several shots, and one of them hit his leg, he said.
Mohammad Iqbal, officer-in-charge of Kalabagan Police Station, confirmed the incident.

 

Exhume  Mahajabin's body: Court

A Dhaka court yesterday ordered to exhume the body of Dr Shamarukh Mahajabin, who was found dead at her in-laws' house in the capital's Dhanmondi on November 13.
The court ordered the deputy commissioner of Jessore to take steps in this regard following a petition, filed by Nurul Islam, father of Mahajabin. He rejected the autopsy report, conducted by Dhaka Medical College, which claimed that she had committed suicide.
Mahajabin's husband Humayun Sultan was arrested after a murder case had been filed by her father.

 

 

 

Missing girl's body recovered from wetland in capital

Police yesterday recovered the body of a nine-year old girl from a wetland in the capital's Bhatara a day after she had gone missing.
Locals noticed the body of Farjana Akter Liza, daughter of Faruk Hossain of Saiednagar, stuffed in a plastic sack floating in the water. Her hands were tied, with injury marks all over her body, police said adding that the assailants might have strangled and dumped her there.

 

 

 

Ashulia RMG workers demonstrate over fellow's death

Garment workers demonstrated at their workplace in Zamgora of Ashulia yesterday following the death of a colleague.
Md Al-Amin, 32, a quality in-charge of Rose Dresses Ltd, was taken to its medical officer after he had felt chest pain while he was working. Later, he died on the way to a nearby healthcare centre. The workers alleged that the authorities delayed sending him there. Factory owner Md Atiqul Islam, however, denied the allegation.

 

 

 

3 illegal water plants sealed in Ctg

A mobile court yesterday sealed off three water treatment plants in Chittagong city for selling water without BSTI approval.
The plants are Shah Amanat Drinking Water at East Madarbari, and Ocean Blue Drinking Water, and Rangdhonu Drinking Water at Kadamtali.
The court also sentenced a staff of Shah Amanat Drinking Water to three months' imprisonment.

 

 

 

Two held with 600 Yabas in Ctg

Police arrested two persons with 600 Yaba tablets in Notun Bridge area of Chittagong city yesterday.
A total of 400 Yaba tablets were recovered from Tofael's possession while the rest from Monir, police said. A case was filed.

 

 

 

Cardiff Int'l School ICT fair ends
City Desk

‘The two-day ICT fair at Cardiff International School, Dhaka ended on a high note recently.
At the fair, students of the school developed and showcased unique software that could help solve everyday problems. Omi Ashraf, a class VII student, developed software, which would facilitate detection of cybercrimes committed though social media such as facebook and twitter and through email. The fair included gaming and digital art competitions, robot and drone exhibition, logo and SMS contests and brainteasers.
