Extortionists shoot sand trader

Extortionists shot a sand trader at Rampura while a gang of robbers looted Tk 40,000 and gold from a garment factory at Khilgaon in the city yesterday.
The extortionists fired on sand trader Mohammad Ali Ashraf, 28, through a window of his house at Jhilpar in West Rampura in the evening when he was watching TV.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Mainul Islam of Khilgaon Police Station said some local extortionists demanded Tk one lakh from him few days ago, but he refused to pay.
Ashraf is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
In the other incident, a gang of seven robbers stormed into the accounts section of the garment factory of Coast to Coast group at Chowdhurypara after holding the security guard hostage at gunpoint around 2:00am.
Khilgaon police said the robbers came to the factory in a microbus and took away the cash box.
However, the police recovered the cash box in Board Bazar area in Gazipur. The box was broken and left abandoned beside Dhaka-Gazipur road.
Arup Kumar Debnath, commercial manager of the garment factory, said the box contained Tk 40,000 and 12 to 15 tolas of gold.
