Save Environment Movement yesterday demanded effective steps to put out the fire at Madhupur forest.
Addressing a human chain at Shahbagh, its leaders said although the fire broke out at Beribaidh Bit of the forest on March 4, the authorities concerned did not take initiatives to put out the fire.
The fire is destroying different herbal trees and the biodiversity of the forest. As a result, different animals are coming out in the locality for want of food, they said.
Over the last few years, the 45,600 acres of forest has been reduced to 7500 acres due to development activities in the forest to serve the interest of a vested quarter.
They urged everyone to come forward to save the forest.
Chairman of Save Environment Movement Abu Naser Khan said although gas and minerals are considered as resources, forests are not considered as such and that is why the forests are being destroyed continuously.
Dr Sadrul Amin, educationist Pijush Kanti and social worker Nazimuddin also spoke.
