Saarc Charter Day Observed

'SMRC can provide regional climate scenario till 2100'

The Saarc Meteorological Research Centre (SMRC) is now capable of generating future climate scenario in South Asia region including Bangladesh till 2100.
This was claimed by officials of SMRC at a seminar at its Agargaon office in the capital to mark the South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Charter Day yesterday.
“The Saarc countries are prone to natural catastrophes and most of them are meteorological in nature. Now SMRC is able to provide any future climate scenario in the Saarc region till 2100 by dint of its four models,” said Dr Nazrul Islam, head of synoptic division of SMRC at the seminar.
He said the Saarc Charter Day is observed every year on December 8 to commemorate the historical signing ceremony of Saarc charter.
“But this year it was observed on December 14 at SMRC due to Eid vacation,” he added.
Saarc Director General Kazi Imtiaz Hossain inaugurated the seminar where two keynote papers were presented.
Dr Someshwar Das presented a paper on the 'Role of SMRC for the welfare of the people of Saarc region' while Dr M Nazrul Islam presented a paper on the 'Climate change and its impact on the region and accordingly how SMRC can deliver its expertise for its mitigation and adaptation'.
A documentary film on climate change was also presented at the seminar.
