33 denied tickets in Ctg district

4-party now without candidates in two seats

Nomination papers of 33 aspirants out of 141 in the 16 constituencies under Chittagong district have been cancelled due to loan default or failing to produce required papers.
With the cancellation of nomination papers, BNP-led four-party alliance now has no candidate in Chittagong-5 (Raozan) and Chittagong-16 (Sandwip) constituencies.
Twenty-two of the nomination papers, mostly filed by bigwigs of the major political parties, were cancelled on the second and last day of scrutiny yesterday, sources said.
Those who found their nominations cancelled include BNP aspirants SM Fazlul Haq, Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury, Mostafa Kamal Pasha and Mostafa Kamal Pasha Babul, AL aspirant Khorshed Alam Sujan, JP central leaders Morshed Murad Ibrahim and Md Shamsul Alam (Master), banker Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury, LDP aspirant M Yakub Ali, and Nezami Islami Party central leader Muhammad Izharul Islam Chowdhury.
Meanwhile, AL candidate Abul Kashem Master for Chittagong-3 and BNP candidate Syed Wahidul Alam for Chittagong-4 got their withheld nomination papers okayed yesterday.
Abul Kashem Master, who had a case in connection an uncleared loan from Uttara Bank, got the stay order on the case extended for three months yesterday.
Bangladesh Bank showed Wahidul Alam as defaulting loan of Tk 2 crore 21.77lakh of Shahjalal Bank. But Wahidul could furnish paper from the concerned bank that said the loan was yet to be classified.
BNP aspirants SM Fazlul Haq for Chittagong-4 and ZA Khan for Chittagong-3, AL aspirants Khorshed Alam Sujan for Chittagong-10 and Saifuzzaman Chowdhury for Chittagong-12, JP central leader Md Shamsul Alam for Chittagong-11 and LDP aspirant Omar Faruk for Chittagong-13 could not register candidature for failure to produce final nomination papers of respective parties.
BNP aspirant Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury got his nomination paper cancelled as the court order clearing him off loan default reached the Returning Officer's Office after the time for scrutiny expired at 5:02pm.
The nomination papers of BNP nominated Mostafa Kamal Pasha and BNP aspirant Mostafa Kamal Pasha Babul for Chittagong-16 (Sandwip) constituency were cancelled for defaulting bank loan and income-tax return.
JP central leader Morshed Murad Ibrahim who got AL-led grand alliance ticket for vital city seat of Chittagong-9, and LDP aspirant M Yakub Ali for Chittagong-11 had nomination papers cancelled for defaulting loan.
Morshed Murad Ibrahim had a case against him with Artharin Adalat in connection with defaulting a loan amounting to Tk 19 crore 44 lakh 99 thousand and 770.
Md Yakub defaulted loan amounting to Tk 14 crore 92 lakh in a bank and a financial institute.
The nomination paper of Nezami Islami central leader Muhammad Izharul Islam Chowdhury was cancelled for not getting the party registered with EC, sources said.
Banker Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury, an independent aspirant from Chittagong-14, could not register as candidate as he failed to fulfill the requirement of collecting signatures of one percent voters.
The other aspirants whose nomination papers were cancelled yesterday include Md Khaled of JSD (Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal), independent aspirants Md Jahangir Alam Dastagir and Md Shah Alam of Chittagong-2, LDP independent aspirant Abul Mozaffar of Chittagong-14, Abdul Alim Nizami of Chittagong-15, BNP rebel Md Nurul Mostafa and independent aspirant Md Zahir Hossain of Chittagong-16.
Earlier eleven nomination papers of nine candidates were cancelled on the first day of scrutiny on Wednesday.
