Babar stripped of division status in jail

Mobile seized from his hospital cabin

Jail authorities again caught detained former BNP state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar talking on a cellphone at a cabin of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The phone was seized and he was moved to a prison cell around 8:00pm last night as punishment for violating the jail code.
Meanwhile, former BNP lawmaker engineer Manjurul Ahsan Munshi was released on a High Court bail yesterday afternoon from Dhaka Central Jail.
Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (DIG-Prisons) Maj Shamsul Haider Siddique told The Daily Star, "Lutfozzaman Babar was caught red-handed talking on a mobile phone around 2:40pm in the cabin of BSMMU."
"Further measures would be taken against him," he said.
Sources said an individual tying the phone to a rope swung it into Babar's second-floor cabin from the third floor of the building.
Arrested on April 28 last year, Babar was awarded 17 years' imprisonment in an arms case. He was caught with a mobile phone earlier and punitive measures were also taken against him.
Manjurul Ahsan Munshi of Comilla, arrested on May 28 last year, was released at around 4:00pm yesterday.
Munshi, his wife and brother are accused in several cases, including extortion, tax evasion and other criminal cases.
Meanwhile, former BNP minister Mirza Abbas was released on parole for five hours to attend the burial of his mother-in-law.
He was released around 3:00pm from BSMMU and returned to jail after 8:00pm.
He has been convicted for tax evasion and sentenced to eight years' imprisonment.
