University of Professionals inaugurated

Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) started its academic activities in the city yesterday.
The BUP is the 29th public university which was established on June 5 with a motto 'excellence through knowledge'.
The university will run all educational institutions of the army, navy and air force and facilitate professional degrees for armed forces personnel.
Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed formally inaugurated the university at Mirpur cantonment.
Speaking on the occasion, the army chief hoped that the BUP will soon be turned into a world standard centre of education and make significant contribution to the development of the country.
He said nine academic institutions which were earlier affiliated with Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and National University will now be affiliated with the BUP.
The nine institutions are National Defence College, Defence Services Command and Staff College, Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Armed Forces Medical Institute (AFMI), Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA), Bangladesh Naval Academy (BNA) and Bangladesh Air Force Academy (BAFA).
Initially bachelor degrees of 10 categories in various disciplines of engineering, medicine and general education, and masters degrees of 25 categories in various disciplines of military studies, war studies, medicine and M. Phil will be awarded from this university.
The university has Faculty of Security and Strategic Studies, Faculty of Technical Studies, Faculty of Medical Studies and Faculty of General Studies for smooth conduct of the academic activities of different institutions.
Besides, there is a Faculty of Business Studies which will initially conduct MBA and Executive MBA programmes, and subsequently BBA programmes.
The university has full authority like any other public university to confer up to Ph. D. degree.
BUP deals not only with the education of armed forces personnel but also the students of civilian community at home and abroad through its affiliated bodies.
BUP Vice-chancellor Major General Dr Abdul Wadud also spoke at the inaugural function.
