Call for unity of lawyers to restore democracy

With a call for unity of lawyers irrespective of their party affiliation and opinion for the restoration of democracy, the 4th national conference of Bangladesh Gonotantrik Ainjibi Samity was inaugurated at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium in the city yesterday.
Around 4000 lawyers present at the conference also demanded trial of the war criminals.
They criticised the caretaker government for its role about Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid and raised question about the rule of law in the country.
The lawyers said the country is still bearing the legacy of the British laws which need to be changed to adjust with the present situation.
They said although the judiciary has got independence, the common people are yet to get justice.
Convener of Sammilita Sangram Parishad Barrister Amir-Ul Islam said the lawyers should remain united as conspiracies are on to foil the general election.
He said the lawyers can play their role properly in protecting democracy if they remain aware and united.
General Secretary of West Bengal Lawyers Association Ashok Boxy said democracy is being affected through out the world and the fight for democracy in Bangladesh is not an isolated incident.
He expressed his solidarity with the Bangladeshi lawyers for the restoration of democracy.
Former law minister of West Bengal Nitish Adhikari said divide and rule policy of the British government always gave birth to communal power in the subcontinent, so unity is the basic strength for the lawyers to resist any conspiracy to weaken democracy.
Former judge of the appellate division of the Supreme Court Justice Kazi Ebadul Haque was the chief guest at the conference with Barrister Shafique Ahmed in the chair.
Advocates Jahedul Bari, SM Asadullah Tarek, SMA Sabur, Nurul Islam Sabuj, ZI Panna, Mahbub Alam, Abdul Based Mojumder and Khandaker Abdul Mannan also spoke at the inaugural function.
