The Hamiduzzaman experience

Artworks by Hamiduzzaman Khan

Hamiduzzaman Khan is a Bangladeshi sculptor who has carved a path distinctly his own in our art arena with significant forms, themes and variations of work. Hamiduzzaman, may be regarded by art critics and other art experts as having been most influential in the 60s, but in effect he has continued to exercise a profound sway not only over art in this region but also of the contemporary art world in general.
A thought-provoking and imaginative painter, Hamiduzzaman is always searching for the mysterious chapter of creation in his voyages through the vast diverse ocean of nature. His inspired images evoke a symbiotic relationship with nature, a marriage of landscape and a vision that enables the artist to use nature's most elegant palette and views with advantage. It can easily identify different phases in Hamiduzzaman's work. He has been able to create a new language, working with colours, lines and some sculptural and architectural images. Some of his prime works concern form, which remind us of his sculptural backdrop.
Over the last four decades, Hamiduzzaman has been constantly trying to give a new language and fresh shape to his works. When we closely observe Hamiduzza man's paintings, we can easily recognise his affinity for various unfamiliar and familiar forms. He likes to play with nature, form and structure orientations. He always tries to ensure an intense combination between colours and forms. Colour, texture, visible and invisible lines are the most predominant aspects of his paintings.
In this exhibition, Hamiduzza man has done a number of faces. Some faces seem to be primitive, tribal, and unfamiliar. The faces are not identical and each face expresses a unique explanation and look. The face is the most significant part of the human body and it can express the language of the mind vividly. The facial expressions are superb and impressive. His composition is styled with geometric shapes and lines. In creating so many faces in different perspectives, Hamiduzzaman has again demonstrated his unrivalled creativity. The exhibition is mainly significant for one reason that art lovers can enjoy painting and watercolour simultaneously.
Hamiduzzaman has internalised the inner essence of nature in many of his works. It is noteworthy is how he brings a deep capacity to feel and respond to the beauty of nature in his works. Celebration of colours and lines has created a new emotional and psychological depth in his works. His works are distinctive for aesthetic balance. His paintings (acrylic on canvas) and watercolours seem to be a flowing stream. He has tried to capture the mystery of nature and its different phases.
Hamiduzzaman's semi-abstraction of landscape, and the transparency of the watercolour technique, enhances his use of the background as romantic view. His space is hierarchical in that the most important forms take precedence by position rather than by perspective, resulting in abstract relationships. Sensual colours and remarkable theme has given a different look to his paintings.
Hamiduzzaman is a workaholic and always wants to create something novel and phenomenal. By inventing new forms and exploring novel themes, he has acquired a distinguished position in our art milieu.
The fortnight long solo painting exhibition of Hamiduzzaman Khan titled 'The Intimate World of Colour” will began today (23-8-08) at Asiatic Society of Bangladesh Gallery of Fine Art, Nimtoli.
