Cartoonist Arif sent to jail

A Dhaka court yesterday sent detained contributing cartoonist Arifur Rahman of the Prothom Alo to jail following publication of a completely unacceptable cartoon by him in the 431st issue of the daily's weekly satire magazine Aalpin.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the order when Tejgaon police produced him before the court and appealed to send him to jail.
Arif was shown arrested under section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
According to the prosecutor, publication of the cartoon titled "Naam" (name) has hurt the Muslims' religious sentiments and also dishonoured their religious belief.
Investigation Officer Abdul Mabud in his submission said an unstable situation has been created in the country following publication of the cartoon.
After the hearing, Magistrate Abdul Fattah ordered to send Arif in jail.
