Celebration marking the reopening of a canal in Netrakona

A daylong cultural programme was held at Mohanganj upazila headquarter in Netrakona district last Sunday to mark the reopening of the 10 km long Shialjani canal, recovered after 50 years. The celebration was organised by the upazila administration of Mohanganj and 'Dharmapasha' of Sunamganj district.
The daylong celebration included nouka-baich (boat race), Jari songs, Ha-du-du match and a cultural programme.
Environmentalist Abu Nasar, president of 'Paribesh Bachao Andolon'; Kazi Abed Khan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Mohanganj upazila; Masudul Haque, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Dharmapasha upazila; and Shahid Iqbal, Chairman of Mohanganj pourasava were present at the celebration.
Over 50 boats from the haor areas took part in the nouka-baich in Shialjani canal.
After the boat race a competition on Jari songs was held at the Mohanganj open ground premises. Around 12 groups took part in the competition. This was followed by Ha-du-du matches. Eight Ha-du-du teams took part in the competition.
The UNO of Mohanganj upazila handed over prizes among the winner.
The celebration wrapped up with a cultural programme held at the Mohanganj upazila auditorium. Local artistes performed in the programme.
