Verdict in extortion case against Nazmul, Sigma Huda June 12

A Dhaka court yesterday fixed June 12 as the date for pronouncing verdict in an extortion case against detained former communications minister Nazmul Huda and his wife advocate Sigma Huda.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) pressed charges against former BNP lawmaker and Chairman of Channel 1 MAH Selim and his family members in a case filed against them for amassing Tk 73 crore illegally and concealing information about their wealth worth Tk 22 crore in their wealth statements.
NAZMUL HUDA-SIGMA CASE
After completion of arguments from the prosecution and the defence, Judge Abu Mohsin of the Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court yesterday set the date for delivery of the verdict.
During the trial, the court recorded statements of 11 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant and the IO of the case. Nazmul Huda and Sigma were produced before the court during the hearing.
On July 29 last year, former BNP lawmaker GM Siraj filed the extortion case against the couple with Dhanmondi Police Station, complaining that they had demanded two Maruti cars from him for the use of weekly Khaborer Antorale, published by Sigma Huda.
He also said the accused later intimidated him into providing them with a car worth Tk 3.95 crore.
SELIM FAMILY CASE
ACC Assistant Director Shamsul Alam, also the IO of the case, submitted the charge sheet against MAH Selim and his family members to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka showing 61 people as prosecution witnesses.
The other chargesheeted accused are Selim's wife Amena Begum, son Mehedi Hassan and daughter Sahara Selim.
Amena, Sahara and Mehedi have been absconding and the IO prayed for issuance of arrest warrants against them and an order to attach their properties.
On December 6 last year, ACC Assistant Director Ali Akbar filed the case with Gulshan Police Station and them.
In the first information report, the complainant said Selim concealed information about his property worth Tk 12.38 crore in the wealth statement submitted to the commission and he accumulated TK 62.96 crore illegally.
Later, the investigation found that Selim and family members had concealed information about his property worth Tk 22,06,69,937 in their wealth statements submitted to the commission and amassed Tk 73,16,14,693 illegally.
