18-party postpones today's rally

The BNP-Jamaat-led 18-party opposition alliance last night postponed their rally scheduled for today demanding restoration of the caretaker government system.
BNP Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed told reporters that the opposition alliance postponed the programme as Dhaka Metropolitan Police had not given them permission to hold the rally in front of the BNP central office in the capital's Nayapaltan area.
However, Deputy Commissioner Anwar Hossain of DMP Motijheel Zone early yesterday told The Daily Star that they had not put any obstruction for today's rally in front of the BNP central office.
Sources in the BNP said the 18-party alliance backtracked from its decision to hold the rally due to the ongoing mass agitation at the city's Shahbagh demanding death penalty for war criminals of the Liberation War.
