Burnt dowry victim cries for treatment

A 28-year-old housewife is anguishing at Jessore Medical College Hospital (JMCH) with 35 percent burn injuries she received when her husband allegedly set her on fire for failing to meet his Tk 2 lakh dowry demand.
Jasmin Begum's burns, on the front part of her body, have become infected and she has been referred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital's burn unit, said JMCH doctors.
But the victim's family said they were not financially solvent to pay for the treatment as they had experienced neglect at government hospitals while medicines needed for her treatment were expensive.
Police arrested the husband, Saiful Islam, son of Abdar Mollah of Khojarhat village under Jessore sadar upazila, on Thursday after Jasmin's brother Basarat Kha filed a case with Jessore Kotwali Police Station.
Jasmin yesterday painfully recollected December 6, 2012 when Saiful, to whom she had been married for around 12 years, doused her with kerosene, ignited it and locked the door of their Khojarhat residence.
When the neighbours arrived, Saiful, his father Abdar Mollah and mother Hazira Bibi claimed that Jasmin had tried to commit suicide. The three admitted her to JMCH four hours later under a fake name and fled, she said.
JMCH sources claimed that Jasmin's brother left with her after some four days and returned on January 2, this year after her condition deteriorated at her father's place, in the upazila's Sultanpur.
SI Roksana of the police station said police were trying to arrest the in-laws and Jasmin would provided all out support.
