Fresh rise in prices of essentials

Prices of essentials, including rice varieties, pulses, flour and sugar, registered a fresh hike on both wholesale and retail markets in the capital last week.
Although the government fixed the price of edible oil for 15 days from February 25, most of the retailers are not following the price, alleged customers.
The Daily Star correspondent visited the retail and wholesale kitchen markets in the city and found that prices of rice increased by Tk 10 to 30 per mound on the wholesale market. However, the prices in almost all the retail market rose to Tk 1 per kg.
Price of Najirshail, which was stable for about a month, shot up slightly by Tk 1 per kg while the price of coarse rice of all varieties leapt to Tk 1 per kg on the retail markets.
Abdul Hannan, a rice retailer of Karwan Bazar, told this correspondent that prices of both the coarse and fine rice like swarna (Indian), guti, irri, paijam, miniket, lata hiked by Tk 10 to 30 per mound.
Price of pulses hiked by Tk 8 per kg on both the retail and wholesale markets. The low quality pulses was selling at Tk 66 while the fine quality at Tk 84.
Price of sugar increased by Tk 4 to 6 per kg in the last two weeks on the both retail and wholesale markets. A kg of sugar was selling at Tk 34 to 36, which was sold at Tk 29 to 30 two weeks ago.
