“Studio Art” is the title of a weeklong exhibition featuring works of talented and dedicated photographer MM Zahidur Rahman Biplob. The exhibition recently (October 20) ended at Drik Gallery in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
Noted photographer and cinematographer Anwar Hossain inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest. Renowned photographer and photography teacher Rafiqul Islam; photographer-media personality Shankar Sawjal; accomplished portrait photographer Chanchal Mahmood and model-media personality Sharmin Lucky were present as special guests at the inauguration.
“I am impressed by Biplob's exhibition. I can still recall when 7/8 years back, Biplob came to me with some of his photos. What has now made me surprised is that I see a more able and experienced photographer whose current works are quite dissimilar to his previous ones,” said Chanchal Mahmood.
Art is much about visuals. If the rays of beauty endlessly attract the aesthetic eye behind the lens, the art of photography is generated. The exhibition featured 40 artistic photographs of models, including photographer Anwar Hossain, Indian filmmaker Gautam Ghosh, actor-photographer Shankar Sawjal, singer Pritom Ahmed, model Sharmin Lucky and the photographer's son Zahin Masroor.
These photographs can definitely boast of unique composition, exposure of the models' personalities, background, ISO, depth of field, aesthetic background, golden section, mid-tone, colour-tone, shadow, contrast, details and sharpness. Interestingly enough, Biplob has not used Photoshop much when editing the images.
According to post-structuralism, language is incapable of expressing universal meaning, as it is slippery; it rather conveys local, traditionally imposed meaning. Photography or any other visual art form has a language of its own and claims to have universal meaning. When the language of images speaks, written words or lingual titles prove to be futile. The photographer attributed no title to his images as they speak for themselves.
The artiste roamed around entire Bangladesh in search of exquisite images -- impassable hills, unfathomable sea and pointy roots of mangrove forest -- with which Biplob has so far taken part in 12 group exhibitions. “Studio Art” is the artiste's 3rd solo exhibition.
Biplob's favourite subjects include nature and its elements -- landscape, lifestyle and wildlife -- ranging from a confused squirrel to a successful kingfisher; a boasting butterfly to a twitchy dragonfly.
The subtle game of light and shadow prevail in almost all the images. As twilight rays gleam from the Prussian blue sky and when that is used as a background, it not only grips an art connoisseur but also anyone taking a peek.
Biplob has bagged several national awards in photography. At present he runs one of the biggest and well-equipped photography studios -- called 'Studio Creations' -- in Dhaka (Hatirpul area). The photographer also runs his own photography school there.
