BNP for arrest of Suranjit

The main opposition BNP yesterday demanded arrest of former railway minister Suranjit Sengupta in connection with the railwaygate scandal and asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take stern action against him.
The party also blamed the ruling party once again for the attack on Buddhist temples at Ramu in Cox's Bazar, saying that the government had stigmatised the country through this shameful incident.
Addressing a protest rally in front of BNP central office at Nayapaltan in the capital, party's senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, “It was not ACC's duty to give clean chits to corrupt people like Suranjit and Abul Hossain.”
The rally was organised protesting the arrest of Juba Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and police action at the BNP central office last week. City BNP convener Sadeque Hossain Khoka presided over the rally.
The gathering, however, severely disrupted vehicular movement in the area, as it was arranged on the street.
On Ramu violence, Mosharraf, BNP standing committee member and former minister, said the attack had been going on for nine hours and within 200 yards of the police station, but the government did not take any action against the attackers. This proved that the government was involved in the heinous incident, he alleged.
Another senior leader of the party Moudud Ahmed termed the Ramu incident a disgrace to the country. “We have investigated the incident and tried to find out the truth. Our report will soon be disclosed,” he added.
Referring to the Sonali Bank scam, the BNP leaders said the arrest of the Hall-Mark managing director was not enough. "The men in the government who were involved in the scam must be brought under trial," they said.
BNP leaders Rafiqul Islam Mia, Mirza Abbas, Aman Ullah Aman, Zainul Abdin Farroque, among others, also addressed the gathering. Several thousand leaders, workers and supporters joined the rally in processions.
