Teachers seek govt intervention

Teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) yesterday said government's intervention was required to break the deadlock at the institution.
"The government should come forward to save the reputed institution through removing the incumbent vice chancellor and his deputy," said Prof Ashraful Islam, a teachers' leader.
No classes have been held at Buet since it reopened on Saturday after a 44-day closure. Student presence was also thin yesterday.
The Buet authorities have called an academic council meeting on Monday to decide on taking admission test as soon as possible this year.
Seeking anonymity, a teacher, however, told The Daily Star that most of the teachers would not attend the meeting under the current administration. Buet Teachers Association launched agitation on April 7, bringing 16 allegations against VC Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof M Habibur Rahman.
They have been refrained from the protest since July 31 after the High Court directed them not to stage any demonstration for the interest of smooth academic activities.
The teachers, however, have been individually continuing token strikes wearing black T-shirts reading "Save Buet, Remove the VC and Pro-VC" since reopening of the university.
