119 assistant judges appointed

The government has recently appointed 119 assistant judges, raising the number of lower court judges across the country to 1,598.
Supreme Court (SC) Registrar AKM Shamsul Islam told The Daily Star yesterday that the new assistant judges would join their offices on August 1.
The government appointed the judges after the Judicial Service Commission selected them by holding examinations, said the registrar.
State Minister for Law Md Qamrul Islam hoped that the rate of disposal of cases would increase following the appointment of the new judges.
Around 20 lakh cases are pending across the country, the SC sources said.
