Pabna University of Science and Technology

Strike ends as authorities promise to meet demands

Employees and workers of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) called off their indefinite strike on Sunday night after the university authorities assured them of meeting their demands.
Earlier on June 19, class three and class four employees and workers of the university started indefinite work abstention to press home their nine-point demand.
The demands include removal of the proctor, right to form workers union, ensuring promotion and overtime facility for the workers, pay scale for diploma employees, priority to the graduate and post graduate employees for promotion in service, and ensuring permanent jobs for members of the family who had donated land for the university.
The university authorities sat with the employees and workers at the administrative building at night and agreed to meet the demands as per rules
“They withdrew the strike and resumed their duties as we assured them of meeting the demands as per rules,” said Dilip Kumar Sarkar, chairman of electrical and electronic engineering department and head of the committee formed by the university authorities to settle the problems.
Earlier on the day, the PUST authorities sat with the employees and workers twice but failed to bring any solution to the stalemate.
The university faced the stalemate as students supported by a section of Chhatra League activists started agitation at the university on June 17 demanding resignation of the vice chancellor for what they said widespread corruption and nepotism in recruitment at the university. The situation worsened as the workers and employees started demonstration and work abstention on June 19.
